Christ School football coach Tommy Langford
Football Ready for Season Opener
First game under new coach Tommy Langford is Friday
Last season, Christ School competed in the NCISAA Division 1 State Playoffs after heading in with an 8-1 record. Though the Greenies fell to the eventual State Champion, Charlotte Christian, it was just another step in the overall improvement of the program.
This year's returners show incredible promise as they are led by new head coach, Tommy Langford. "If we do the little things right on and off the field and remain disciplined on both sides of the ball, we can go 1 and 0 each week," Coach Langford said. "I like the pressure of leading this program and I can't wait for our first game."
The Greenies will start their season on the road facing the Christian Academy of Knoxville at 7:30PM on August 17 before returning home the following Saturday to face Houston Episcopal on August 25th at 5:30 PM. "We had a chance to see (CAK) last year," said Langford. "They are a tough team, well-coached, with a storied history. We like the challenge of going on the road for our first game."
Last year, Christ School was led by a group of underclassmen, but a year later, those players have experience and are hungry for more. Conference Player of the Year and All-State performer Sidney Gibbs '19 is back after running for over 2,000 yards and will lead a ground attack that includes Kaedin Robinson '19, who is back after tearing an ACL and missing the 2017 season. All-State performer Keyvaun Cobb '19, who recently committed to Army West Point, will continue locking down the opposing team's best receiver, while playing receiver himself on the offensive side of the ball.
The Greenies had four all-conference players last year and return three of them including Gibbs and Cobb. Additionally, the Greenies had West Shuler '19, who led the team from the linebacker position on defense after Navy Shuler '20 went down, stepped in at quarterback. With the return of Navy, West is ready to concentrate on just defense.
After a season in which injuries kept him from all but one game, Navy is back under center and looking a positive year. Navy threw for six touchdowns in his only game last season, and just wants to get out there and compete this year. "It was tough to go through surgery and miss the opportunity to help the team. That being said, I pushed myself this off-season to get faster, and increase my arm strength," Navy said. "We have a good team, and our expectations are to win."
The Greenies will have quite a few opportunities to do that at home this season as they will face Episcopal next week, as well as Cannon School, Robbinsville, Victory Christian, Charlotte Latin, and will host the Blues of Asheville School on Saturday October 27th at 1:30 PM for the 92nd playing of "The Game." The Greenies won last year's contest, 47-6, on the road.
