Athletic Complex Nears Completion

Work wrapping up on newest addition to Christ School's campus

Coach Jeff Depelteau's team is playing better than ever.

And on Tuesday there was something to get excited about besides the ninth consecutive win for Varsity Basketball.

Portions of Christ School's new Athletic Hall of Fame were visible to fans who watched the Greenies easily handle Carolina Day in Mebane Field House, 86-54. The JV team was also victorious, 60-18.

Five different players scored in double figures for the Varsity: Kojack Thompson '19 (22 points), Trey Austin '19 (20), Gabe Wiznitzer '21 (13), Peter Lash '20 (12), and Brad Halvorsen '19 (11). Christ School (18-7) hasn't lost since December 29 and remains undefeated in the Carolinas Athletic Association with a 6-0 league mark.

"The kids are really coming together and making plays," Depelteau said. "There's a lot more 'we' than 'me' right now with this team and they're feeding off of each other."

The Hall of Fame fills the main entranceway to Mebane. It is the centerpiece of Christ School's new Athletic Complex, which should be complete and ready for use in the next few weeks.

Work is still in progress. But parts of the Hall of Fame which are complete are a historic timeline with the heading "Lessons Learned, Character Built," with significant moments since the first year of organized sports for the Greenies (1900). There is a separate wall dedicated to the football rivalry with Asheville School. The series began in 1911 and is the oldest in the Carolinas.

A hallway full of pictures highlights every Division I college recruit since 2005. An old scoreboard has been refurbished by HammerHead Design Build, a Winston-Salem, N.C., company founded by Nathan Ruffin '07. In the future, there will be large displays for members of the Hall of Fame itself as well as Athletic Cup winners.

Other components of the Athletic Complex remain under construction as well, including an expansive two-tiered weight room, artificial turf practice field, locker rooms, and coaches offices.

"I took a peek inside our locker room just the other day. As a whole, it's just going to be an amazing space for our kids and a great addition to what we already have at Christ School," Depelteau said. "We're all looking forward to it."

The Athletic Complex will be dedicated May 5 as part of Alumni Weekend.
