First-Place Tennis Fights Past Carolina Day

Christ School tennis keeps finding ways to win at less than full strength. And as a result, the Greenies have found their way to the top of the Carolinas Athletic Association standings.

They remained the only team unbeaten in conference play Wednesday by scraping past visiting Carolina Day, 5-4.

It was the fourth consecutive win overall for Christ School (5-6, 3-0), which travels to defending CAA champion Asheville School on Friday.

Special thanks to Coach Brenneman for this recap of Wednesday’s match:

Christ School again played without Ben Fedder (line 2), and CDS proved a formidable opponent. The 1st doubles team of Max Dukowicz and Jack MacFie for CDS defeated Mike Drendel and Sam Ludington 8-1. Christ School’s 2nd doubles team of William Paschall and Burnam Dubose defeated Aakash Karvir and Nick D’angelo 8-4. 3rd doubles was a dramatic set, with the Greenies’ Henry Warner and Norwood Bryan getting out to a 7-3 lead, only to see the Wildcats’ Ollie Kerr and Thompson Murray storm back and win 9-7.

In singles, Carolina Day got hard-earned wins at 1st and 2nd singles, with Dukowicz defeating Drendel 6-2 7-5, and MacFie defeating Dubose 6-2 6-1. But the bottom of the Greenies lineup came through in a big way, and Christ School won lines 3-6 (Gonzalez over Murray 6-0 6-2, Paschall over Kerr 6-3 6-2, Benjie Bernstein over Karvir 6-0 6-0, and Bryan over D’Angelo 6-0 6-1) to win the match 5-4. Christ School is now 3-0 in the league and is scheduled to play Asheville School next, and Carolina Day is 1-1 and will next play Rabun Gap; both matches are scheduled for 4/14.
