ASHEVILLE - Extraordinary circumstances call for an extraordinary result.
Christ School tennis and Asheville School agreed to make up a winner-take-all match for the Carolinas Athletic Association championship on Tuesday. Even though neither can use it towards leverage for the state playoffs as they have already been eliminated.
The Greenies were the ones celebrating at the end of the afternoon, with senior captain William Paschall ’24 taking an extra minute to soak in his final high school match, a win at No. 6 singles.
Ben Fedder ’24 (No. 1) and William Davis ‘27 (No. 3) prevailed as well, with a 5-0 team victory including a sweep of the doubles – Jani and Norwood Bryan ‘26 paired at No. 1, Ben and William Paschall at No. 2, and William Davis and Jack West ‘25 at No. 3. Jani and Norwood were down 5-2 and 6-3 before winning the tiebreak of their match.
Christ School (9-6) finishes with a 7-1 record in the CAA and is a back-to-back conference champion. Tuesday avenged the only CAA loss for this year’s team (a 5-4 home match with Asheville School on April 17. The rematch was originally rained out and moved indoors Tuesday to the Asheville Racquet Club due to wet weather in the Asheville area.
