Christ School basketball waited a long time to make the shortest road trip in the Carolinas Athletic Association.
Wednesday was worth it.
The JV Greenies set the stage for the varsity with the team’s ninth consecutive win, 84-39 at Carolina Day.
T.J. Hamilton ‘24 led four players in double figures with 23 points, followed by 15 points from Jimmy Jones ‘25 and 10 each from Carter Compton ‘24 and Kennedy Achugamonu ‘23.
Christ School (14-2, 7-0) delivered the knockout blow early, roaring out to a 38-8 lead after the first quarter. On the defensive end, the Greenies used full-court pressure to create turnovers, which in turn led to their biggest single-game offensive output of the season. The previous high had come in their season opener – a 78-24 home win over Gaston Christian on Nov. 13.
A running clock was used for much of the second half. Christ School had not played at Carolina Day since the 2019-20 season – the Wildcats opted not to participate in the CAA last year due to the pandemic. The two campuses are less than 10 miles apart.
Rounding out the scoring on Wednesday were Brewer Nitcher ‘25 (nine points), Truett Compton ‘25 (five), Ty Dixon ‘23 (five), Fallou Faye ‘25 (five), and Cooper Perone ‘24 (two).
The next game for the Greenies is Friday at home against the South Charlotte Thunder. Tip-off is 5 p.m.
Varsity Greenies 57, Carolina Day 29
Head coach Josh Coley made frequent, wholesale substitutions in Wednesday’s nightcap and the Greenies did not suffer a big drop-off no matter who was on the floor.
Nine different players scored and Christ School (13-9, 4-3) led from start to finish after taking a 7-0 lead to begin the CAA game.
Anthony Robinson ’23 and Emanuel Richards ’23 shared the team lead in scoring with 12 points each, followed by Johno Pierce ‘23 (10 points), Bruce White ’24 (eight), Zack Myers ’24 (five), Bryson Cokley ’24 (four), Matthew Pethel ’23 (three), Ty Besses ’22 (two), and Cole Boyer ‘24 (one).
Friday’s 6:30 game with the South Charlotte Thunder will be Senior Night for Ty and Donavon Fitzgerald 22.
