No matter how breathless the scenery may be, the miles take their toll.
It will have been three months Wednesday since Trevor Murrah ’16 gathered his supplies and the will to start a 2,200-mile quest in Springer Mountain, Ga.
The Christ School alumnus is chasing one of the Holy Grails of outdoor recreation – to hike the Appalachian Trail in its entirety.
Trevor said he lost 50 pounds during the first one-third of a journey which will cross 14 different states, ending in Maine. The thru-hike is something he first dreamt about back in high school and was then put on hold for a couple years by the pandemic.
Family and friends have been able to keep up with his progress through social media. Trevor can be seen smiling widely so far in each of his posts. He shared in an Instagram story Tuesday that he had reached the 800-mile mark.
Trevor has estimated that it will take about 5-6 months to complete the trail before he returns home to Vero Beach, Fla.
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy confirms on its website that attempting a thru-hike is not for the meek. Statistics show that more than 3,000 people try each year, with only one-fourth making it end to end.
