Christ School Artists Celebrated With Monthly Series
Senior Jimmy Burke '18 is January's Artist of the Month
Jimmy Burke '18 sees a little of himself in the superheroes he draws.
The creative freedom that pulsates through the Kennedy-Herterich Art Studio will do that to a boy.
Jimmy is Christ School's Artist of the Month for January, a student recognition program that like Kennedy-Herterich, is only in its second year of existence.
"It's an awesome feeling to be selected for something like this," Jimmy said. "I'm honored to see something of mine up there (on the walls of Kennedy-Herterich) when there are so many kids here making cool stuff in all kinds of mediums. This building is pretty new, and it really feels like it has its own atmosphere at Christ School, separate from everything else. I think that's the way that art should be."
Kennedy-Herterich opened for classes in December 2016. There is gallery space in front, and that is where Jimmy's work will be displayed until the end of January. He has drawn such iconic comic book characters as The Joker and Ironman, as well as painted a recreation of a Star Wars movie poster.
Two other Greenie seniors have previously been named an Artist of the Month this school year: Sawyer Duhaime '18 (October) and Trevor Youtz '18 (November). There was no Artist of the Month for December due to Christmas Break.
Art instructor Sarah Baldwin had several purposes in mind when she started the series. Not only does Baldwin want artists to feel like valued members of the Christ School community, but gain experience curating, framing, and exhibiting their work. Baldwin also hopes the artists will give a brief talk on their exhibit to polish public-speaking skills.
