Football Falls Just Short, Loses to Episcopal
Texas is known for having the best high school football in the country. On Saturday, the Greenies welcomed an opponent from the Lone Star State, and for a moment, showed Texas what North Carolina football is all about. Through the half, the Greenies had put together perhaps the best half of football the campus had ever seen. Leading Episcopal High School, 21-0, the offense and the defense were firing on all cylinders.
Two touchdown runs from Sidney Gibbs '19 and an aerial connection between Navy Shuler '20 and Kaedin Robinson '19, along with a swarming Greenies defense, had the team looking like world-beaters. However, with just a few minutes in the first half remaining, Gibbs (who ran for over 2,000 yards in 2017) went down with a season-ending injury. Though up 21, the momentum at halftime seemed to be changing with the loss of Gibbs.
The Greenies defense continued their tough play in the third, holding the Knights scoreless for a total of 30 minutes, but in the 31st minute, a 55-yard catch and run put them on the board for the first time. Keyvaun Cobb '19 and Aydan White '20 would each intercept Episcopal's quarterback in the third, but by end of the quarter, the Greenies led by just a score, 21-14.
In the fourth, Christ School continued to fight valiantly. With most of its players going both ways, a bit of fatigue set in for the Greenies and the Knights connected for another passing touchdown with 6:06 remaining. With 1:26 left in the game, Episcopal High School connected on another touchdown catch, this one for 85 yards, to take the lead for the first time. Christ School took over, converted a pair of fourth downs, but in the end were unable to get further than the 30-yard line. A tough 28-21 defeat was surely not the result the Greenies were looking for, but their performance on Saturday evening was a testament to their preparation and ability to fight through adversity.
The Greenies look to rebound against Cannon School at home on Friday at 7:00 p.m. That game will be broadcast live on the Christ School Broadcast Network here.
