Football Wins First Game of the Year, 44-7
In their first game of the year, the Greenies travelled to Tennessee to play the Christian Academy of Knoxville in a rematch of last year's season opener. A season ago, the Greenies came away with a victory, 28-11. New Head Coach Tommy Langford was looking for his first win as head of the Christ School football team.
Behind the arm of Navy Shuler '20, the Greenies got on the board and quickly went up 25-0 midway through the second quarter with two touchdown passes to Kaedin Robinson '19 and another to Aydan White '20. Sidney Gibbs '19, who ran for over 100 yards in the first half alone, added a touchdown of his own.
The defensive line, behind the play of Ross Oakley '19, Saevion Gibbs '20 and Ian Adams '21, kept CAK off the board early with a combined four sacks and a fumble recovery in the first half. The Greenie linebackers were swarming throughout the contest and their pressure helped Keyvaun Cobb '19 pick off a pass in the first half.
A late touchdown from Christian Academy of Knoxville at the end of the half made the score 25-7 at the break. In the third, Gibbs broke the game open with a 90-yard touchdown. That was quickly followed by a fumble recovery by Jasper Thomas '20 on a muffed kick return. Seconds later on second down, busted coverage saw Robinson and Shuler hook up for the third time to make it 37-7 late in the third.
During the next drive with the opposition in the red zone, Cobb put the game out of reach with a 98-yard interception return for a touchdown.
The Greenies finished out the game injury free on the way to a 44-7 win on the road. They will play next Saturday hosting Episcopal High School from Houston, TX. That game will be at 5:00PM on August 25th.
