Greenies Advance to State Championship Game

After opening Friday's game with a 80-yard kickoff return by Keyvaun Cobb '19, the Greenies gave up three unanswered touchdowns to end the first quarter. Trailing 20-7 heading into the second to Trinity Christian School, the Greenies football team was looking at three quarters to put together a comeback in the NCISAA D1 playoffs. "We were never worried. The defense was playing well, and the offense was relaxed," said Head Coach Tommy Langford. "We just took it one possession at a time."

For the 21st and 22nd time this season, Navy Shuler '20 and Kaedin Robinson '19 connected through the air with 9:37, and 32.9 seconds, remaining in the half to inch closer and eventually tie the game up headed into the second half.

The Greenies would score their third consecutive touchdown as Shuler found Aydan White '20 who came down with a jump ball to go up seven midway through the third. Trinity Christian would match the Greenie touchdown with their own pass but fail to convert a key point after to trail 27-26, heading into the fourth quarter.

Early in the fourth, Trinity Christian would score through the air once more, but again fail to convert the point after. On the next possession, the Greenies marched the ball down the field, and a Cobb run from two yards out, and a subsequent 2-point conversion success put Christ School up 33-32 with just 6:42 remaining in this semifinal contest.

The Greenies gave Trinity Christian the ball back with 1:32 remaining in the game, but a last ditch hail mary attempt was intercepted by Cobb (his 10th on the year) to end the game. The Greenies, a year removed from making the D1 playoffs for the first time, head to the NCISAA D1 State Championship on November 9th against defending champion Charlotte Christian. Last year, the Greenies fell to Charlotte Christian in the first round of the playoffs, but look to redeem themselves and secure their first state championship in school history.

The game will be at 7:00 pm at Charlotte Christian but can be watched live at the following link: https://youtu.be/GZZ5dfZgnPk
