Greenies Track Shatters School Record, Currently NC's Fastest
This weekend, four members of the Track and Field team traveled with Coach Cobb to the Penn Relays, the oldest and most prestigious track meet in the country, to compete in the 4x400m and the long jump.
With 12 teams lined up, compared to the eight you would find in a normal track meet, two teams jumped lanes illegally in front of Christ School's Juan Mantilla '19, who had just sprint out of the blocks.
"At first, I was startled. It forced me to slow down momentarily in an effort to stay in my lane."
That momentary jousting saw a spikes fly up in the shin of Mantilla, whose leg required stitches afterwards. Though hurt and bleeding, Mantilla sped back into the race and made up ground throughout the last 200m of his leg. After handing off to Keyvaun Cobb '19, things began to get interesting.
Cobb, who finished fourth last season in the 400m at the state meet, ran a season best 48 second split taking the team from fifth to second. He handed off to Kevin Snyder '19, who would later place fourth in the Long Jump in Championship series. Snyder finished with a split of 50 seconds, bringing the Greenies even closer to the first place team.
The final hand off was to Eddie Sherman '19, who did all he could to catch the team in front of him by running a 48 second split of his own. The team's time all together was a 3:20.57, taking seven seconds off the school record, and the fastest 4x400m time by a North Carolina Independent School ever.
The Greenies will host a meet at home on Tuesday, May 1st, before hosting the conference meet next week on May 10th.
