Hammel, Visconti Place in Top-5 at Eye-Opener
On Sept. 1, the Christ School cross country team ran in the Eye Opener Invitational held at the Milliken Research Center in Spartanburg, S.C. The Greenies ran the top-10 boys from the Rabun Gap meet on 8/28. Andrew Hammel '20 picked up where he left off in the 2017 cross country season by leading the Greenies with a 2nd place overall finish. Hammel led the race from the 1-mile mark until 30 meters from the finish line. He finished in a time of 15:49, which is his 2nd best time ever and a fantastic start to the year. Finishing up just behind Andrew was Joseph Visconti '20, Visconti fought well through the 2nd and 3rd miles, moving from 11th place, to 8th, and coming home with a strong last 400 meters to finish 5th. Joseph ran 16:22 to improve upon his best time by 36 seconds. He also ran 1:07 faster than he did in the Eye Opener in 2017. Finishing out the scoring for the Greenies were Kilian Mittermeier '21, Doug Bland '19, and Jack Cross '22. Jack set a personal best by 2:24. Overall, the boys team finished 19th out of 23 teams in the International Division at the Eye Opener.
