Goaltender starts season with Atlanta team on Sunday

Two weeks of training camp weeded out the players that the Atlanta Blaze wanted for their Major League Lacrosse team.

A Christ School alumnus made the cut.

Jason Weber '13 will be doing what he does best – stopping shots – when the Blaze open their season Sunday at home against the Florida Launch. The goaltender is the first-ever professional player for the Greenies' lacrosse program which was founded in 2001 by current coach Jeff Miles.

"It couldn't happen to a better person. Jason was exemplary, both on and off the field, during his time at Christ School," Miles said. "He was one of the hardest-working players I've ever coached. While this is a great testament to the program, it's an even bigger testament to Jason's work ethic and passion for the sport."

Weber came to Christ School from the Canadian province of Ontario. He made over 300 saves in high school, and as a Greenie, was twice named a first team All-American by U.S. Lacrosse (2012, and 2013).

Weber went on to play four years for the University of Detroit Mercy. He graduated last year with a school record for career saves (690) and ranks second all-time among Titans' goalies with a .568 save percentage. Weber had 164 career ground balls. In between college seasons, he played for the Canadian National team.

Weber is one of three goalies on the Atlanta Blaze roster. The others are Adam Ghitelman and Chris Madalon. Atlanta head coach Liam Banks is optimistic about the regular season that runs through August 4.

"We had a very competitive training camp and I was excited about the way all the guys conducted themselves," Banks said. "Our energy level was very high and our staff was pleased with the effort. Our team is anxious to get going next Sunday at the Fire Pit."
