Reggie King '09 Pivots From Athlete to Manager
New venture for former Greenies basketball standout
What comes next when an athlete's career is winding down? Reggie King '09 wants his clients to have an answer long before they need it. King came up with the ethos and idea for Legendary Management in 2013, his senior year for the Winthrop University basketball team. Four months ago, King put that idea into practice. He is determined to grow Legendary Management in the years to come, and one of King's first clients is former Christ School teammate Mason Plumlee '09. The two were together for a couple of Greenie state championship runs in 2008 and 2009. Plumlee has been in the NBA since 2013. King, who is based out of Orlando, was back on campus this week and talked about what he's been up to.
Question: Tell me about Legendary Management?
Answer: We help athletes build their brand, but also start focusing on their future after sports. Our philosophy is lets start building for that the moment you start in the league. Along with some friends in Los Angeles, we've kept slowly building on it for the past four months. Right now, we're working with Mason on a daily basis. He was actually the first guy, and now we're helping out a couple other guys in the NBA. I work from home, but I'm on the road a lot, too, whether it is meeting with the guys or learning as much as I can.
Question: How much do your own life experiences help now?
Answer: It helps a lot. I'll be honest, my senior year of college, after basketball season, I didn't have any idea what I wanted to do. I never knew that I should have been focusing on that my freshman year. It worked out, thankfully. Now being around these guys, they have their hands in so many things. We help them narrow it down, focus, and keep track of things.
Question: What are your memories of Christ School?
Answer: I came here by junior year of high school from Ohio. Christ School is another home for me. I stay in touch with so many people, whether it is social media or texts. I made a lot of great relationships here. I tell people that I cried when I came here, and I cried when I left. It is definitely a special place.
