Soccer Defeats Asheville School in Conference Matchup
Christ School's varsity soccer team has faced a tough early-season schedule again this year, and after nine games a 3-6 overall and 0-4 vs NCISAA 4A schools. Coach Guy Campbell '00 says "This team is so close to winning games but the ball hasn't bounced our way yet. It was nice getting to play a game in Asheville and getting a win on the road at Asheville School (4-0 on Tuesday). We defended well enough to record our second shutout of the season."
Jonny Mennell '22 & T.J. Bell '19 kept the clean sheet in goal with the two combining for seven saves. Team Captain Connor Hall '20 had arguably the goal of the season with a 40-yard bomb that dropped into the upper left corner just 5 minutes into the game – assist Co-Captain Thomas May '19. Jack Lee '21 got the 2nd after his shot on goal deflected passed the keeper just minutes later. "We played really well in the first half, keeping possession of the ball while still creating scoring chances. We did a good job of winning the ball back and moving the ball from side to side opening up passing lanes into the attacking 3rd," said Campbell. With 10 minutes left in first half, Marcus Berger '19 scored the 3rd goal off a deflection from Eddy Sherman's '19 shot to make the score 3-0.
To finish things off Corey Lavinder '19 scored his 4th goal of the season with another assist coming from May early in the 2nd half to make the score 4-0. A delighted Campbell said, "We were able to play everyone who dressed and what impressed the coaching staff the most was the level of play didn't drop once the subs came in. We are now over halfway thru our season and the team is starting to figure out how to implement what we work on in practice and let that carry over to games. In terms of playing the game of soccer – this group does it as well as any team I've coached. What we need to improve on is simple – create more scoring opportunities, bring max effort to practice everyday and stop giving up easy goals. If we can do two of three we will be tough to beat. Once we figure all three out then we will be as good as anyone we will play."
