Miles Bowser ’15 was due to celebrate two milestones this May, his Christ School five-year reunion and his graduation from Tufts University in Massachusetts.

Kristaps Petermanis '00 has been an International Cooperation Specialist with Frontex (an agency of the European Union) since last June.

Christ School seniors will attend 46 different colleges in 20 states, having earned more than $3.5 million in scholarships over a four-year period. The College Guidance Office processed 375 applications, an average of 5.4 per student. The class will attend schools from Harvard and Dartmouth to UNC-Chapel Hill, SMU, and many others.

Christ School’s Class of 2020 does not have a designated spokesperson. However, the opportunity presented itself Thursday and Connor Booher ’20 eloquently demonstrated the character of this year’s seniors.

George Donald ’75 has learned to turn off the part of his brain that controls fear.

The Christ School alumnus turns 63 this month, making him old enough to at least consider retirement. But Donald said he feels a sense of duty instead, working 12-hour shifts as a Senior Staff Interpreter at an Inova Health System hospital in Falls Church, Va.

Stating the obvious, this is an interesting time to work for 3M. The company is constantly in the news for its efforts to ramp up the production of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Christ School alumnus Grant Cleavenger ’05 has been a Senior Mechanical Engineer with 3M’s Scott Fire & Safety division out of Monroe, N.C., since September.

Rick Toomey ‘73 came out of retirement to become Director of South Carolina’s Department of Health and Environmental Control in February 2019.

Toomey was called to serve the people of his home state then. The same is true now, even through a personal health scare.

Fine Arts students at Christ School might not know Ian Wilkinson personally, but they probably know his work.

The Asheville muralist has been involved in projects all over town – from an iconic water tower in the River Arts District to a re-creation of Catawba Falls splashed across some downtown stairs. And perhaps the piece most recognizable to Greenies? A scene painted on the side of the 12 Bones Smokehouse South restaurant.

Fortune smiled on Mason Plumlee ’09 when he found that a neighbor in Indiana had a private indoor gym suitable for all his basketball needs. That’s right, arguably the greatest athlete in Christ School history is looking for silver linings during the COVID-19 pandemic the same as the rest of us.

Wesley Garbee '20 believes that difficult circumstances reveal the character inherent in each of us, he explained in Christ School’s first Senior Speech since online learning began on March 23. 

Restaurants are being hit about as hard as any industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. Especially restaurants that benefit from the tourism just across the street at Asheville’s Biltmore Estate, which is presently closed to the public for the first time since World War II.

Seth Leonard ’01 may have attended Christ School for only one year, but that year – his senior year – was impactful for both the school and his future. Leonard received the Phil Tilghman Award, given to the student who has had the greatest positive impact on the school in his first year, and he was a key member of the Greenie varsity basketball squad. Today, as Leonard looks back on that year at Christ School, he recognizes the ways it paved his path to a career as a successful mayor and community advocate.

Like others at Christ School before him, Will Laney ’21 wanted his Eagle Scout service project to have a personal feel.

Considering the amount of time he has spent in St. Joseph’s Chapel, it shouldn’t be a big surprise that Will gave some love to another historic church. The junior restored the ironwork of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, a place of worship that has existed since the 1800s in his hometown of Columbia, S.C.

Hard times have been known to bring out the very best in Christ School boys, as evidenced by two young Greenies over Spring Break.

Colin Brazas ’22 and his mother Elizabeth Brazas P’22, who is president of the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, volunteered on March 15 to help assemble a giant animatronic sculpture in the River Arts District of Asheville. Wake, by Mel Chin, an Asheville-based conceptual artist, will be on display through September.

Aldo Mell ’18 jokes that his closest friends from Christ School probably remember him as a serial complainer. All kidding aside, five years as a Greenie put Mell on the path to being a selfless leader at the University of Arizona.

The U.S. Marine Corps is always on the lookout for well-rounded individuals with high character and conviction. The same can be said for the Marines’ Semper Fidelis All-American Program.

Out of thousands of nominations and applications, only 13 high school students from North Carolina were named All-American finalists, including a junior from Christ School.
