100 Years of Christ School Basketball

team

From humble beginnings came one of the greatest basketball programs in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association.

This is the 100th year of Christ School basketball, which played its first official season in the winter months of 1922 and 1923.

The picture above is dated 1926 and the caption reads as follows:

“The Old Gym was constructed in 1922 and provided a rickety sanctuary for the basketball program, which officially began during the 1922-23 season. Often games were postponed due to rain and ice because the Old Gym was meant to be a temporary structure; consequently, the building had no heating capacity and a tin roof. Visiting coaches bundled up before coming to games. The Old Gym was torn down in 1953 after Memorial Gymnasium was built and dedicated to Christ School students who died in any American wars. Pictured here (back row, left) is Coach Richard Fayssoux ’16 (Fessor), the man responsible for the development and continuation of most of Christ School’s sports.”

David Gaines ’84, P’26 is not only one of the best players in school history but coached the Greenies to 425 career wins and state championships in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011.

The current team is 25-3 under second-year coach Josh Coley and plays Louisiana's Isidore Newman (21-6) on Friday night at 8 p.m. (EST) in New Orleans.

Jamari Briggs ’24 recently scored his 1,000th career point and averages 13.2 points per game, which ranks him second between Keenan Wilkins ’24 (14.0 ppg.) and Emanuel Richards ’23 (11.0 ppg.). Anthony Robinson '23 leads the team in rebounding (8.7 rpg.) and blocks (1.6 bpg.). Keenan gives out 5.1 assists per game and Emanuel is averaging 1.7 steals.
