Returning to traditions has been an overarching theme this year at Christ School.
Varsity basketball did not diminish the aura of “Christmas in the Greenie Dome” Tuesday night.
Feeding off the energy of a big home crowd, the Greenies jumped on visiting Greenville (S.C.) from the outset with a 9-0 lead, then coasted to a 64-28 blowout. The tandem of Emanuel Richards ’23 (20 points) and Bryson Cokley ’24 (15 points) outscored the Red Raiders by themselves.
Tuesday was the first Christmas in the Greenie Dome since 2019 due to the ongoing pandemic and the Christ School community turned out in force – the bleachers were full of students, alumni, faculty, and family members.
Mebane Field House was decked out with holiday inflatables, and as is customary with the “Silent Night” game, the Greenie student section tried to make as little noise as possible until Christ School’s 10th point.
Bruce White ’24 broke the ice, sinking a free throw with 46.5 seconds remaining in the first quarter. By that time, the Greenies (7-5) were well on their way to their seventh win.
Christ School expanded on a 10-6 first quarter lead to go up 27-15 at halftime. Besides the scoring of Emanuel and Bryson, seven other Greenies added points to the winning cause – Johno Pierce ’23 (eight points), Zack Myers ’24 (five), Diego Rojas Bowe ’25 (four), Ty Besses ’22 (four), Quinton Cancel ’23 (three), Bruce (three), and Anthony Robinson ’23 (two).
Greenville came into Tuesday’s game with a 4-1 record but scored the fewest points of any Christ School opponent so far this season. The Greenies will not play again until Dec. 27-28, when they are part of the Chick-fil-A Classic in South Carolina. The next home game is their Carolinas Athletic Association opener against Asheville Christian Academy on Jan. 5.
JV Greenies 42, Greenville 41
Things looked bleak for the Christ School JV team after the Greenies trailed by as many as 10 points in the third quarter and were behind eight entering the fourth quarter.
They were down, but never out.
Plenty of hustle and timely 3s drew the team closer. Greenville inbounded the ball in the final 10 seconds with the lead, but Carter Compton ’24 was able to force a turnover. Cooper Perone ’24 scooped up the batted ball and drove for an uncontested layup to win the game.
Scorers for the Greenies (6-2) were Carter (10 points), T.J. Hamilton ’24 (seven), Cooper (six), Truett Compton ’25 (five), Fallou Faye ’25 (four), Ty Dixon ’23 (four), Sebastian Knight ’23 (two), Brewer Nitcher ’25 (two), and Calvin Williams ’24 (two).
