Senior team captains Andrew Hammel ’20 and Joseph Visconti ’20 have been accepted into the prestigious Nike Race of Champions for Saturday’s Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, N.C.
The duo from Christ School will line up for their 3.1-mile race through the WakeMed Soccer Park at 11:30 a.m. A full team of Greenies is entered to run the Town of Cary Invitational Boys, Seeded 5K at 12:15 p.m.
Andrew was the runner-up in the 2018 NCISAA 4-A state meet and is a three-time Buncombe County individual champion. Joseph came in third at last year’s state meet and was second to Andrew in last month’s country meet. Joseph has verbally committed to Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, over Fall Break.
As a team, Christ School has already enjoyed unparalleled success this season, winning the Buncombe championship for the first time-ever on September 4. The Greenies went on to place a respectable fourth in the Eye-Opener and Hare and Hounds meets, competing against schools from throughout the Southeast region. Andrew (fourth place, 15:45.00) and Joseph (sixth, 15:55.90) both finished in the top-10 individually at Hare and Hounds. They ran season-best times, as did Rocky Hansen ’23 (37th, 16:40.80), Dawson Reeves ’24 (45th, 16:50), Ethan Kemp ’21 (144th, 18:13.60), and Jack Fitch ’20 (194th, 18:58.70).
