Never miss an opportunity to network.
Pete Hartwig, the lead pastor of City Church in Charlottesville, Va., and father of Chaplain Peter Hartwig, came to campus last fall.
Nick Banker ’27 introduced himself to “Pastor Pete,” as Mr. Hartwig calls him, and they proceeded to have a conversation about Nick’s burgeoning interest in a career as a minister. Pastor Pete offered the idea of an internship. With a bit of preparation, the dream became a reality over Spring Break for Christ School.
Nick spent a week attending staff meetings and worship services. He joined for pastoral care visits and held a series of curated conversations with a wide range of people in the larger Charlottesville community including former UVA tennis coach and athletic director, Gordon Burris.

Mr. Hartwig shares that it was a great week for everyone involved, that his father and City Church were delighted to host a young man of such promise and intelligence as he discerns his own calling.
Nick said of the experience: "My internship with City Church was amazing! I was able to see what a church is like more than just Sunday services. I learned a lot about the work of being a pastor, and it has helped me as I think about whether I want that to be part of my own life too. It was also a great opportunity to see Charlottesville and the University of Virginia. Overall, it was amazing and I am very thankful to Christ School and City Church for giving me this experience.”
