Aviation Program Celebrates First Two Solo Flights

Tyler Brouse '25 completed his first solo flight Sunday in Rutherfordton, N.C.

Flying solo is a big deal for any pilot, especially one still in high school!

Luke Garner ’24 and Tyler Brouse ’25 have each taken off and landed without anyone else in the cockpit of the school plane, “Greenie1,” the past nine months.

Tyler touched down in Rutherfordton, N.C., on Sunday while Luke’s first solo flight occurred last June at an airport in Marion, N.C.

The boys were recognized for their growth and development through the Robert Morgan ’36 Aviation Program in Monday’s assembly.

The aviation program at Christ School is named for one of the most notable Greenie alumni – Memphis Belle pilot Robert Morgan – and was added to the list of extracurricular activities last winter. There are only two other high school programs like it in the United States.

Pilots are taught by Stephen Hoffert P’26 and faculty member Les Thornbury, who have both flown in the U.S. Air Force.
