Basketball Clobbers Covenant Day on Opening Night

Jumping out to a 14-0 lead was just the beginning for Christ School varsity basketball Friday night. The Greenies one-upped themselves by scoring the first 16 points of the second half, too.

An opening night crowd was thrown into a tizzy, and every player saw time at some point in a 64-24 home win over Covenant Day that couldn’t have been more thorough.

For those who don’t remember, these are the same Lions who beat Christ School late in the regular season last year, 63-57. The teams met up again in the NCISAA 4-A semifinals, a 64-59 win that was the Greenies’ toughest game in the playoffs.

Christ School matched its points total from that postseason game Friday, but that was about the only similarity. American University recruit Madden Collins ’25 (14 points) led four players in double figures, along with Dacen Petty ’26 (12 points), N.C. State recruit Mikey Wilkins ’25 (12), and William Robinson ‘26 (10).

Thomas Vickery ‘27 added seven points, followed by Tyler Jones ‘26 with six, and Henry Chapman ’25 with three. The Greenies (1-0) led 39-9 at halftime and rested their starters for the majority of the second half, which included a running clock.

“Defensively, we were great tonight,” Christ School coach Josh Coley said.

“That was the first time we had put a scouting report in, and we were just sitting back as a staff to see how it went. They did great. The defense really jumpstarted us and led to us having a good offensive game. We’ve got an unselfish group. They play for each other, which is good. Guys were turning down good shots, but still shooting with confidence.”

Christ School travels to Legacy Early College (S.C.) on Tuesday and is back at home next Friday against Victory Christian (JV at 5 p.m., varsity at 6:30).
