INDIAN TRAIL - Beginner’s luck does not apply to Brooks Barbee ’27. At least not the “luck” part.
Brooks continued a stellar sophomore year by winning the 2,000-meter steeplechase at Saturday’s Spring into the Season track meet at Metrolina Christian Academy.
His time (6 minutes and 16.60 seconds) was the second-fastest ever run by a 10th grader from North Carolina and came in the first-ever steeplechase race for Brooks. Most high school facilities in the state are not equipped to hold the race, which includes hurdling over large, immovable barriers and water jumps. Brooks is from Waynesville, N.C., and was an all-state runner for Greenie cross country last fall.
Dallas Reeves ’27 (6:36.54) came in fourth place Saturday. Noah Clancy ’26 was the fourth-place finisher in the 1,600 meters (4:35.54), while Cam Adkins ’27 was 12th (4:43.13), and Carl Baird ’26 was 16th (4:47.17).
