For the second time in three years, Carson Ownbey ’18 and one of his teammates on the UNC Charlotte golf team made for a winning combination in the Carolinas Four-Ball Championship.

Ownbey and Ben Woodruff again found themselves holding the crystal trophies provided by the Carolinas Golf Association on Monday in Camden, S.C. The duo proved to be the best team after two rounds of stroke play and five rounds of match play. They clinched a 4 and 3 win over Stephen Carroll and Walker Cress in Monday’s tournament finals on the 15th hole at Camden Country Club.

“We always look forward to this tournament,” Ownbey told the CGA.

“It’s a lot of fun because we know each other’s games really well and seem to always play well together. When I made a mistake, he was always there with a solid hole and vice versa.”

Ownbey was part of Christ School’s last state-championship team (2014) as an eighth grader and committed to play college golf for Charlotte his sophomore year. He would go on to be a three-time NCISAA all-state selection and was deemed the Asheville Citizen-Times’ All-Western North Carolina Player of the Year in 2018.
