Kennedy Achugamonu ’23 let the weight of his words bring together the Christ School community for a special prayer Monday to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“Almighty God, who hast created us in thine own image: Grant us grace fearlessly to contend against evil and to make no peace with oppression; and, that we may reverently use our freedom, help us to employ it in the maintenance of justice in our communities and among the nations, to the glory of thy holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen."

Kennedy is a Howley Scholar from Arlington, Va., who was chosen to lead off Monday's Assembly.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coordinator and Science instructor Jeremy Jacobs read a poem that Maya Angelou wrote about Dr. King entitled “Abundant Hope.” Head of School Dr. Sean Jenkins encouraged the boys to seek out Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech on YouTube.

“Life Every Voice” is the theme of this year’s MLK Day program at Christ School, a full day in which Greenies take a break from classes for workshops, films, service trips, and more. Sunday’s snow postponed the activities planned for Monday to January 24. Additionally, there will be a time set aside for reflection in Chapel.
