James B. Banks understood the profound impact that competent and compassionate leadership could have on the lives of young men. For 30 years, he embodied that difference at Christ School.
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of James' passing on Thursday at the age of 84.
Arrangements are being handled by West Family Funeral Services in Weaverville, N.C. A graveside service with military honors will take place on February 4th at 2:30 p.m. in the Veterans section of West Memorial Park in Weaverville. A memorial service will follow the next day, also at 2:30 p.m., at Arden Presbyterian Church.
During his three decades at Christ School, James served in multiple roles, including Assistant Headmaster (1977-2006), Dean of Students, and Maintenance Coordinator. He enjoyed teaching Science with a concentration in Biology for much of his time as an administrator. In 2006, the same year he retired, James delivered the Commencement address, where he spoke about the importance of community — how no young man can become the best version of himself without love and nurturing support.
James first joined Christ School in 1970 as a Biology and Earth Science instructor. After one year, he moved on to work at Sewanee Academy for six years, only to return to Arden in the fall of 1977, answering the call once again.
A native of Weaverville and a proud U.S. Air Force veteran, James remained remarkably active in retirement through his involvement with Arden Presbyterian Church. He served the church faithfully as a Deacon, Ruling Elder, Bible Study leader, and Chairman of the Missions Committee.
James is survived by his wife of 62 years, Linda Rogers Banks; daughters, Kay Banks Dinkins and Jennifer Marie Banks; sister, Lenore Banks Waggoner; brother, Gerald David Banks; and grandchildren, Katie Dinkins, and Natalie Dinkins Cossio and husband Kevin.
