Christ School athletics lost a legend with the recent passing of James Lewis Martin ’57 (pictured to the far right), better known to his classmates as “Jim.”

Jim was a charter member of the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997 and the school's first NFL player. He was briefly with the Cleveland Browns before serving his country in the U.S. Army for three and a half years.

Jim was a captain and letterman in three sports at Christ School (football, basketball, and baseball) and played football on scholarship at Wofford College following graduation.

Jim had been living in Naples, Fla., and is survived by his wife, Janet Martin; his daughters, Tamara Boxwell (Scott) and Deeatra Keefer (David); his siblings, Wesley Martin Jr. (Dianne) and Sue Tritschler (Fred); his grandchildren, James Burmeister (Marne), Ryan Burmeister (Neesha), and Janet Guelfi; and his great-grandchildren, Hayden, Parker, and Zelda Burmeister.
