Drop and give me 22!
The Veterans Service Club did one last set of the 22 Pushup Challenge on Monday in Alumni Plaza.
The challenge is a yearly tradition now at Christ School and has been popularized nationally since 2016 for bringing awareness to veteran suicide prevention, as well as showing appreciation to military service members and veterans. Studies have shown that an average of 22 veterans take their lives each day.
Generally, the challenge goes on for 22 days as well, but like many things this year was affected by Hurricane Helene.
The students and faculty gave U.S. Navy veteran, cancer survivor, and Math Department chair Mike Mohney P’23 a standing ovation for his Veterans Day talk in assembly.
Mr. Mohney told the boys that doing the simple, but sometimes difficult things in life are the best way to show their appreciation for veterans.
“When I think about this day and how I would wish people would honor veterans and acknowledge veterans, it isn’t through thanks or praise, or ceremonies or parades. To be honest, vets don’t really like that. That’s not why they did it,” Mr. Mohney said.
“The best way we can honor our vets is by the way we live, by the way we act, by the way we treat each other. When a vet comes back and sees someone doing something small, something they don’t want to do, something inconsequential, something kind, it makes their heart warm. And they realize that it was all worth it. It’s all about embracing all that they hold dear – all that the vets hold dear – things like humble confidence, duty, integrity, trust, honor, selflessness, and team-first.”
