Making shots becomes an afterthought when it’s so hard to find clear passing lanes and open looks.
Cannon School experienced this level of discomfort Friday in the Greenie Dome.
Christ School players were at their defensive best in a 75-38 home win that puts them now only two wins away from a third consecutive NCISAA 4-A state championship.
“Our defense this year has been impressive,” Coach Josh Coley said.
“Guarding each other every day can be tough, and they are competing. It’s working right now. We prepared them very well, they were aware of what Cannon does after watching film, breaking it down in practice. They knew their job, and early on we challenged them to compete with some fire and they did.”
The Greenies (24-2) were up 23-7 at the end of the first quarter, 44-19 at halftime, and triggered a running clock late in the third quarter. Five different players reached double figures.
Scorers were: Mason Collins ‘28 (18 points), Dacen Petty ‘26 (16), Mikey Wilkins ‘25 (13), Madden Collins ‘25 (11), Tyler Jones ’26 (11), William Robinson ‘26 (three), Thomas Vickery ’27 (two), and Henry Chapman ‘25 (one).
Next up is the NCISAA 4-A semifinals Tuesday at home against Forsyth Country Day (27-5), which won at Covenant Day on Friday, 68-63. Forsyth was the NCISAA 3-A state champion for the 2023-24 season. Win or lose, it will be the final home game in the high school careers of five seniors: Henry, Madden, Mikey, Jo Ahart '25, and Jimmy Jones '25.
Tuesday’s game will tip off at 6:30 p.m.
