Football Adapts and Overcomes at Metrolina Christian

Adaptability is never overrated.

Vincent Lytle ’24 found out he was going to be Christ School’s starting quarterback hours before kickoff Friday.

The junior from Winnipeg threw his first varsity touchdown pass – 20 yards to Zack Myers ’23 at the 1:18 mark of the opening quarter – and the Greenies led wire-to-wire for a 27-8 win at Metrolina Christian Academy.

“Overall, excited for our men to get back on the winning track,” Coach Chad Walker said.

“I thought Vincent Lytle did awesome. He probably had 17 reps (in practice) all week. To start the game on short notice, he kept us in it and did a really nice job in the first half. Defensively, we played lights out tonight. It got a little sloppy in the third quarter, but we dialed it back in for the fourth quarter.”

Indeed, after leading 7-0 at halftime, the Greenies (3-4) put away the Warriors (2-5) on their homecoming night with defense as well as the rushing and passing of Tray Mauney ’23.

Tray completed touchdown throws to Zack (25 yards) and Will Neumann ’24 (18 yards), sandwiched around a 13-yard quarterback keeper for a TD at the 1:20 mark of the third quarter.

Christ School’s leading tacklers for the season – Cayden Jones ’24 (7.6 per game), Jack Shimer ’23 (7.2), Cooper Perone ’24 (6.2), Jordan Edgecomb ’25 (4.8), Quinton Cancel ’23 (4.3), and Josh Harrison ’24 (4.2) – stepped up all night to make big plays on third and fourth down.

Christ School plays its first home game in more than a month next week when Charlotte Country Day comes to Arden. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and it will be Senior Night.
