You could say it’s been a big week for Cayden Jones ’24. But honestly where do they rank at this point?

Legion Collegiate put a short opening kickoff in the breadbasket of the most highly-recruited football player in Christ School history and it was all downhill from there for the visitors from Rock Hill, S.C.

Cayden, who has received scholarship offers from Auburn, Michigan, and Penn State in the past week, scored twice in Friday’s 40-7 home win. So did N.C. State recruit Zack Myers ’23, both on offense (a 35-yard touchdown reception) and a 15-yard pick six on defense.

Tray Mauney ’23 ran for a spectacular 29-yard quarterback keeper at the 6:36 mark of the third quarter and lofted his first pass attempt into the waiting arms of Khalil Conley ’24 for a 67-yard score. Khalil went on to make an interception, and a Greenie defense that allowed a Legion touchdown on its first possession, stiffened up greatly from that point on.

“We started out a little flat. We had the opening touchdown and they hit a couple plays before we made some adjustments,” Christ School coach Chad Walker said. “But overall, pleased with how the guys played. Offensively, our playmakers stepped up. We still have a lot to clean up for next Friday night (at Rabun Gap), but overall I’m pretty thrilled with where we’re going.”

Win or lose, Friday was the last home game for the Greenies (2-2) until Oct. 14 and they played with the appropriate urgency.

The Lancers (1-3) scored on their opening possession but turned the ball over on downs at the Christ School 4-yard line and 11-yard line before halftime. Jordan Edgecomb ’25 had multiple sacks on the night for the Greenie defense, including one on the initial play of the second half.

Friday was Military Appreciation Night and included a pregame National Anthem sung by lineman Noah Henthorn ’24, in uniform and pads, as the rest of the Greenies unfurled a huge American flag. For the second consecutive week, there was a Fayssoux Field flyover by the plane that will be used to train pilots in Christ School’s new Robert Morgan ’36 Aviation Program.

With Georgia up next, the Greenies have now played opponents from three other states: Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
