Football Takes Unlikely Path to Home Playoff Game

Christ School football players charge up a grassy hill and through smoke-filled air as Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” blares over the speakers.

If you have never seen the entrance before a game at Fayssoux Field, there is one more chance in 2023.

Brackets for the NCISAA Division I state playoffs were released Sunday morning – Christ School (3-6) is the No. 4 seed and will host fifth-seeded Charlotte Country Day (4-6) on Nov. 3. A kickoff time has not yet been determined.

Homefield advantage is a luxury that felt like it had slipped away when the Greenies were 0-5 last month. Instead, they won three of their last four regular-season games, starting with a 20-7 victory at Asheville School on Sept. 30.

Christ School's last meeting with Country Day was a 24-13 win last year in Arden. Overall, the Greenies have taken the last three games in the series, dating back to the 2019 playoffs when they upset the top-seeded Buccaneers in Charlotte, 27-20.

Five different players scored touchdowns in Friday’s 43-19 win at Metrolina Christian Academy and the Greenies had three interceptions.

Leading rusher Kaden Brown ’24 (812 yards, six touchdowns) has scored five times in the past two games. Mason Holtzclaw ’27 (1,218 yards and 10 touchdowns with 12 interceptions) ran for a pair of TDs against Metrolina. The freshman quarterback’s top targets have been Calvin Williams ’24 (21 receptions for 321 yards and three touchdowns), Morlue Eesiah ’24 (18 receptions for 244 yards and one touchdown), T.J. Hamilton ’24 (13 receptions for 158 yards and one touchdown), and William Neumann ’24 (13 receptions for 133 yards and one touchdown).

Tackling-wise, the Greenies are led by Cooper Perone ’25 (8.3 tackles per game), Cayden Jones ’24 (7.4), Jordan Edgecomb ’25 (6.1) and Jakob Iwanek ’24 (5.3).

Sophomore Spencer Thompson '26 has made all five of his field-goal attempts with a long of 35 yards and 23 of his 24 extra points.
