Ups and downs are to be expected with any season, but Christ School football gave the school community some unforgettable moments in 2022 while battling injuries and other attrition.
First, the team rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Asheville School for an 11th consecutive year, following it up the very next week with an unlikely state playoff win at Charlotte Latin.
Four seniors involved in those moments were part of another Wednesday – National Signing Day.
Tight end Matthew Pethel ’23 finalized his commitment to Lenoir-Rhyne, while lineman Dylan Lindsey ’23 (Virginia-Wise), linebacker Jack Shimer ‘23 (Denison), and punter Seth Shuler ‘23 (Pikeville) signed, too.
Wide receiver/defensive back Quinton Cancel ’23 (Davidson), quarterback Tray Mauney ’23 (Lafayette), wide receiver/defensive back Zack Myers ’23 (N.C. State), and lineman Tom Tang ’23 (Oberlin) signed shortly before the school went into Christmas Break.
The Greenies won their first state championship in 2020 and have produced 31 college players the past five years.
