Basketball players have a love-hate relationship with practice, especially the kind of practices that Christ School coach Josh Coley has been known to run.
The Greenies (23-2) are better conditioned and better disciplined than other teams for a reason.
And with the NCISAA 4-A state playoffs now here, Coach Coley said the next goal for the back-to-back state champions is to get to 50 practices for the season.
He explained the significance of that number.
“Being at home, I know it will be rowdy here by the time we get ready to play Friday. (Cannon School) has earned it to have gotten to this point, so we won’t take them for granted,” Coach Coley said.
“It’s going to be fun. Our first goal of the year is always to win the conference, we were fortunate enough to do that. Now, our second goal is to get to 50 practices. Normally, 50 is about the number it takes to play in the championship. Everybody is 0-0 now, we’re just trying to get to 1-0 and 50 practices.”
The Carolinas Athletic Association champion Greenies (23-2) have a six-game postseason winning streak that dates back to 2023, but they have never been a No. 1 seed during that run until now.
Cannon (15-11) was last year’s No. 1 and lost in the state semifinals. The Cougars are coming into Friday’s game with momentum from Tuesday’s 80-76 win over Rabun Gap (Ga.).
Christ School has not played since last Saturday’s 75-46 Senior Day win over Lincoln Charter. Scorers for that game were: Thomas Vickery ’27 (22 points), Mikey Wilkins ‘25 (12), Madden Collins ‘25 (nine), Dacen Petty ‘26 (eight), Mason Collins ‘28 (eight), Jimmy Jones ‘25 (eight), Jo Ahart ‘25 (four), William Robinson ‘26 (two), and Koen Booker ‘27 (two).
Mikey has since been named the CAA Player of the Year for the second time, with Dacen, Madden, and Tyler Jones ’26, also named all-conference.
