Mickey Meguiar ’21 hyped up the rest of the Christ School football team Friday, shouting excitedly at the top of his lungs as the Greenies huddled for their usual pregame routine.
Nothing changed after kickoff, Mickey and the defense were still taking charge.
Big hits, three forced turnovers, a safety, and countless punts out of visiting Trinity Christian Academy all added up to Christ School’s first shutout of the season – a 38-0 blowout win in the semifinals of the NCISAA Division II state playoffs at Fayssoux Field.
With their fifth consecutive victory, the top-seeded Greenies (5-2) now get to host No. 2 Harrells Christian Academy (8-0) in next week’s championship game. A kickoff time has not yet been determined.
Christ School scored all its points in the first three quarters Friday and was able to overcome the self-inflicted wounds of four turnovers. The defense had a lot to do with that compensation.
Mickey made a sack for a safety, Brady Iaonnidis ’22 recovered a fumble, and Christian Hudson ‘23 and Zack Myers ‘24 snared interceptions. Wilson Handy '21 sacked the Trinity Christian quarterback for a big loss on the final play of the game.
Cayden Jones ’24, one of the top playmakers for the defense, caught his first two touchdowns of the season on offense (8 and 23 yards) from A.J. Simpkins ’22. Tray Mauney ’23 later came on to connect twice with Zack for touchdown receptions of 6 and 24 yards. Bryce Sain ’22 rushed for a 1-yard touchdown and fellow junior Fernando Machuca ’22 got the scoring started for the Greenies with a 26-yard field goal at the 7:22 mark of the first quarter.
