Greenie Football Rolls to 2nd Win

Ashe Hamrick
Ashe Hamrick '21, left, scored his first varsity touchdown in Friday's 47-0 home win over the Cabarrus Warriors.

Ashe Hamrick ’21 recognized everything about the scenario from practice.

He watched the quarterback’s eyes, broke on the ball, and seconds later had his first varsity touchdown.

Christ School varsity football won big as expected Friday in front of a Father-Son Weekend crowd at Fayssoux Field. However, there were a number of highlights worth taking away from a 47-0 rout of the visiting Cabarrus Warriors, such as Ashe’s pick-six interception.

Running back Pierce Hammonds ’22 plowed his way into the end zone for his first Greenie touchdown just 2 minutes, 4 seconds into the game. The sophomore later added two more scoring runs from 8 and 9 yards. Kiki Alcime ’20 was credited with four sacks and responsible for causing one of two Cabarrus safeties.

“It’s so amazing to be part of this team,” Ashe said. “Coach (Nick) Luhm is the best coach I’ve ever had. And everyone on this team means something to me. The same exact thing happened in practice this week when I was playing on the scout team, so I was ready (for the pick-six).”

Navy Shuler ’20 and most of the starters only played for two quarters and were sharp in that short amount of time. The senior quarterback threw a beautiful 33-yard touchdown pass to Lex Long ’21 in the first quarter and scored on a 5-yard keeper in the second. Cade Mintz '21 tacked on a 2-point conversion after Christ School's first touchdown and Henry Duggins '20 made all but one of his extra-point kicks.

Jasper Thomas ’20 made an interception for a defense which posted its third shutout in two years. Christ School led 45-0 at halftime, which meant a chunk of the second quarter and the entire second half was played with a running clock.

“Everyone contributed tonight and a lot of young kids got to step up,” Coach Luhm said.

“It’s amazing to see a kid like Ashe Hamrick have a moment like that because he practices hard every day. Offense, defense, special teams, I thought we executed well in all phases.”

The Greenies will be on the road for the first time next Friday and it should be a test. Kickoff for their game at defending N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A state champion Murphy (2-0) is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
