Mason Plumlee ’09 has been many things in his basketball career – a three-time state champion in high school, a national champion in college, an international champion with USA Basketball, and now an NBA veteran with the Charlotte Hornets.
He will always be a “Greenie hero,” too, Father Roberts proclaimed Tuesday.
Mason was a surprise guest speaker in Tuesday's virtual Chapel service, offering the boys encouragement, words of wisdom, and taking questions before he joined the rest of the Hornets for a flight to Boston.
“I’m very proud to have gone to Christ School and had a great experience there,” Mason said.
“It’s a special place that breeds great relationships and strong bonds, and really holds true into forming you into a man. Embrace it, love it, live it. You’ll be grateful that you did, if not in the moment than down the line.”
Mason, 31, has been in the NBA for eight years. This is his first season in Charlotte. He leads the team in rebounds (7.4 per game) to go along with averages of 6.8 points and 2.9 assists a game.
Without knowing it, Mason said he still harkens back to lessons from his time as a Greenie.
“I’m so proud of my graduating class and what we accomplished together,” Mason said.
“Going through the graduation process and tracking where people are headed, and what they’ve done with their careers, you realize that you’re really proud to be part of something bigger than yourself. The fact that the school has really thrived in the past decade or more, it’s something that’s bigger than any of us. Just to contribute to something bigger than myself is something special.”
