Given its dominance of Carolinas Athletic Association basketball over the years, Christ School is used to getting every opponent’s very best effort. Wednesday was a prime example, with the varsity team having to pull together down the stretch to leave upset-minded Carolina Day with a 66-51 win.
The Greenies outscored the Wildcats, 17-3, in the fourth quarter and received the biggest individual contributions from their starting-five of DeAnte Green ’22 (12 points), Justice Ajogbor ’20 (11 points), Zack Myers ’23 (10 points), Drew Redmond ’21 (nine points), and Adam Keever ’20 (nine points).
Gabe Berardi ’22 came off the bench to provide a spark with seven points. Charlie Browder ’21 added six, and Ray Faison ’20 scored two.
Adam knocked down a 3-pointer from the left shoulder as time expired in the second quarter, allowing Christ School (9-10) to take a 38-33 lead heading into the visitors locker room at halftime. Earlier in the night, the Greenies had fallen behind 19-16 after the first quarter despite 10 early points from De’Ante.
Zack was worked his way into the Greenies’ starting lineup in recent weeks. His scoring total Wednesday included a pair of 3s and six of Drew’s points were in the fourth quarter.
Christ School is the defending CAA champion. However, the previous matchup between the Greenies and Carolina Day (5-7) had been a regular-season loss (59-58 last January in Mebane Field House). The two schools are scheduled to play again later this month on Jan. 31.
