Christ School varsity soccer’s fourth shutout of the season was the sweetest one so far.
The Greenies (8-2-0, 2-0-0) played with high intensity from the first whistle on Friday, with goals from Jack Lee '21, Adam Keever '20, and Robert Freeman '22 to blank visiting Asheville School, 3-0. Goalkeeper Michael Mahoney '20 and the rest of the Christ School defense held the Blues (6-2-0, 2-1-0) scoreless in the Carolinas Athletic Association game.
Jack gave the Greenie offense the only goal it would need at 11:51. He flicked a ball just outside the box that deflected off an Asheville School player and over the keeper’s head. Christ School took a 2-0 halftime lead thanks to Adam’s sixth goal of the year. The senior chased down a ball from Justus Borchardt ’21, collected it from about 40 yards out, and capitalized with 3:53 remaining in the first half. Adam outran the Blues' entire back line to get to the ball.
The Greenies’ final goal came off a set piece – Connor Hall ’20 found Robert Freeman ’22 in the box with 24:29 to go on a free kick. The sophomore’s header was his first varsity goal for the Christ School. Along with Connor and Justus, Agustin Marichal Leon '21 gave out an assist. Carson Campbell '21 led the team in shots taken.
Michael made nine saves and it was his play that really has the Greenies coaching staff thinking of bigger things to come, head coach Guy Campbell '00 said. Asheville School had outscored opponents, 45-9, prior to Friday.
"Our guys really executed the game plan that we've worked on all week," Coach Campbell said. "We wanted to play out of the back and we did a great job with that today. The play and decision-making of Michael Mahoney was the difference in the game. He controlled the game, from his timely saves to his distribution out of the back."
Friday's JV game ended in a 1-1 tie. Quinn Roberts '24 scored Christ School's goal in the second half.
Varsity soccer will try to remain unbeaten in the CAA on Tuesday when it hosts Asheville Christian Academy at 4:30 p.m. The game will be live streamed by the Christ School Broadcast Network.
