Faint thunder could be heard rumbling on the periphery of Christ School’s campus Thursday evening. Meanwhile, the Greenies were stirring up a little noise of their own in NCISAA 4-A soccer.
Michael Mahoney ’20 made 10 saves for his first varsity shutout, while Fox Smith ’21 and Carson Campbell ’21 did all the scoring in a season opener that doubled as a statement win – 2-0 over visiting Charlotte Providence Day.
An incoming thunderstorm held off just long enough for a game with potential state-playoff implications to be completed. Keeping safety in mind, Christ School’s training staff advised both teams to seek shelter shortly after the final horn sounded.
Greenie coach Guy Campbell ‘00 had his confidence from the preseason rewarded in a number of ways Thursday. He likes the overall attitude that every Greenie has shown so far, and has been especially impressed by the examples set by Michael and Connor Hall ’20 as senior captains. Coach Campbell described Thursday as a veteran type of win by a veteran type of team.
Fox’s goal was the first of the season for the Greenies (1-0-0). It came at the 16:39 mark on a set piece – Fox lined up for a direct free kick from about 25 yards out and beat a diving Chargers keeper by going bottom-left. Carson’s goal came from inside the 18-yard box, and assisted by Agustin Leon ‘21 with just 3:34 to go in regulation. Coach Campbell said that the successful chance was a perfectly-played counter attack with great execution.
Christ School will look to carry over the momentum Friday when the Greenies host Charlotte Christian (0-0-0). Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m., followed by a JV game between the two schools at 6. The varsity game will be shown live on the Christ School Broadcast Network. Thursday’s CSBN commentators were Andrew Hammel ’20 and Henry Lytle ’23.
