Greenies Claim Their Share of CAA Championship

final

Christ School basketball coach Josh Coley talks to his players about the domino effect of momentum, what he likes to call "stacking days."

The program’s first conference championship in three years is a pretty big domino.

The Greenies (27-4, 6-2) will have to share the Carolinas Athletic Association title with Rabun Gap (21-8, 6-2) and probably Asheville School (17-5, 5-2), too. But they went about it the right way the past two weeks – beating Rabun Gap by double digits in front of a hostile crowd in Georgia before drubbing Carolina Day, 75-37, at home Wednesday for their most lopsided CAA win yet.

“We gutted out some tough wins, some wins in some games without key people. That really got us over the hump and I’m proud of them,” Coach Coley said.

“The first thing we talk about as a coaching staff is wanting to win conference. We need to win the conference before we can think about states. That’s the mindset and that's what we tell our guys.”

Emanuel Richards ’23 asserted himself early in Wednesday’s game with 10 first-quarter points on his way to an 18-point night that included four 3-pointers.

The Longwood University recruit was the only player in double figures, but everyone who dressed Tuesday for Christ School scored points of some kind – Keenan Wilkins ’24 (nine points), T.J. Hamilton ’24 (eight), Jamari Briggs ’24 (seven), Anthony Robinson ’23 (seven), Bryson Cokley ’24 (six), Lleyton Thomas-Johnson ’24 (four), Jozohn Price '24 (four), Cole Boyer ’24 (three), Ty Dixon ’23 (three), Matthew Pethel ’23 (three), Jo Ahart ’25 (two), and Diego Rojas Bowe ’25 (one).

“We want to be fresh (for the state playoffs), so we’re going to try to play as many as guys as possible. Plus, the guys deserve it,” Coach Coley said.

“They work hard every day in practice and don’t ask for anything. It’s a big part of the culture we’re building.”

JV Greenies 76, Carolina Day 46

Will Sherrill ’25 led four players in double figures with 18 points and the JV Greenies steadily pulled away Wednesday for their 16th win.

Will connected four times from beyond the arc. Brewer Nitcher ’25 (16 points), Jimmy Jones ’25 (12), Calvin Williams ’24 (10), Blue Simmons ’25 (five), Brody Ballard ’25 (four), Henry Chapman ’25 (three), James DeYoung ’26 (two), and Hayes Hewett ’25 (two) provided the rest of the points.

Christ School (16-2) finishes its season Friday at home, part of a four-game series with the South Charlotte Thunder. Game times will be 4 p.m. for the Middle School, 5 for the Freshman, 6 for the JV, and 7 for the Varsity.
