Greenies Get Retribution in First Win

A lot can change in 10 months.

Christ School varsity soccer players showed how much they have grown and matured on their end Friday.

Two flawlessly-executed goals allowed the homestanding Greenies to claim a 2-1 halftime lead, eventually becoming a win by the same score over Charlotte Providence Day.

Christ School (1-1-0) started the scoring at 13:42 – Jackson Knoll ’23 played a ball perfectly through a couple Chargers defenders and fellow senior Jonathan Chen ’23 was on the other end of the assist. As he was falling to the ground, Jonathan was able to direct the ball past the Providence Day keeper to make the score 1-0.

Two sophomores combined for the goal that proved to be the game-winner. Truett Compton ’25 gave the Chargers (2-2-0) fits all afternoon and crossed a pass from about 20 yards out that found the head of Wells Edwards ’25.

The Greenie defense and junior goalkeeper Ben Yang ’24 were able to keep Providence Day scoreless for the next 54 minutes to secure the first win of the season for Christ School. The same two teams met in last year’s first round of the NCISAA 4-A state playoffs – a game also played in Arden – with the Chargers coming out on top, 3-0.

Head coach Guy Campbell '00 wanted to honor the moment Friday, but also show sportsmanship. So he and the players returned to their locker room for the postgame celebration seen in this video.

Christ School travels to East Henderson on Monday for a JV/Varsity doubleheader that kicks off at 5 p.m.
