Better get what you can when you can off Charlie Collins ’24.
Charlie made his second home start of the season Saturday. And much like the first, he only got more unhittable with each ensuing pitch. Working fast on a cold day, the Western Carolina University recruit struck out 10 and allowed his only runs in the first inning of a 6-2 complete game win over Charlotte Latin.
The Greenies (7-2) gave their ace three runs of support in the third inning and again in the fifth.
“We had some self-inflicted wounds early in the first inning and they made us pay by going ahead 2-0,” Christ School coach Wes King P’27 said.
“But when you’ve got a quality arm, once they get in a rhythm and get going, I knew Charlie would start throwing up zeroes. I knew we just needed to keep battling for him and have some good at-bats. They’re tough. Coach (Daniel) Cooke has got a good squad and they’ve played some good teams. It was a good test to come out with a win today.”
Charlie (3-0) now has 27 strikeouts and a 1.52 ERA this season. Saturday was the first home game for he and the Greenies since Charlie shut out Cannon School, 9-0, in the season opener last month.
Sophomore Riley Shuler ’26 got Saturday’s first rally started with a single in the third. He finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and was the only Christ School batter with multiple hits. Ethan Rose went 1-4 with two runs scored, Corbin Spilliards ’27 was 1-2 with two runs scored and a walk, and Jakob Iwanek ’24 went 1-3 with a team-high two RBIs and pair of stolen bases. The Maryville (Tenn.) football recruit tracked down a couple flyouts in the fifth and sixth innings that would have resulted in extra bases for the Hawks (3-4).
Jonathan Reece ’25 was 1-3 with an RBI and Will Walker ’25 was 1-2 with an RBI. Will's bases-loaded walk resulted in the Greenies’ first run. Luka Rose ’25 had a sacrifice fly.
Christ School is back on the road Monday night at Charlotte Christian (5-4). The Knights shut out defending state champion T.C. Roberson, 8-0, in another game played Saturday.
