Unprecedented times call for unprecedented rewards.

The Asheville Citizen-Times recognized Rocky Hansen ’23 and Christ School coach Randy Ashley as the best runner-coach tandem in Western North Carolina cross country for last fall’s state championship season.

And on Tuesday it was announced that Rocky and Coach Ashley have pulled off a rare double with the newspaper naming them Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year for track & field, too.

Zack Myers ’23 (jumps) and Dawson Reeves ’24 (distance) were also selected to the All-Western North Carolina track team, as was the 3,200-meter relay of Rocky, Dawson, Kahzi Sealey ’23, and Jackson Burch ’22.

Rocky got the attention of everyone in North Carolina last month when he ran a state record for the mile (4:00.76) and 1,600 meters (3:59.36). He set two more individual school records as a junior in the 3,200 meters and 2-mile, and was a leg on the school-record 3,200 relay (7:50.14).

Zack soared to his first individual state championship in the high jump with a personal-best height of 6 feet, 6 inches at the NCISAA Division I meet. Dawson holds the Christ School record for the 800 meters (1:52.83) and the North Carolina record for the mile by a sophomore (4:11.32).

The full All-WNC track team can be viewed at www.citizen-times.com and will be in Wednesday’s print version of the newspaper.
