Josh Coley Named WNC Basketball Coach of the Year

Coaching awards invariably come back to accomplishments by the team.

And this past season’s Greenies deserve to be in the conversation for the best group to ever represent Christ School basketball.

The Asheville Citizen-Times announced its All-Western North Carolina team on Tuesday, with Josh Coley winning the WNC Coach of the Year award for the second time in three years. Seniors Mikey Wilkins ’25 and Madden Collins ’25 earned spots on the All-WNC team.

Coach Coley brought with him proven success from the Charlotte area four years ago. His ability to build a winning culture has translated here and then some. Christ School has won 101 games in that time and the last three NCISAA 4-A state championships.

The Greenies (28-3) look like they will finish ranked 20th in the country by MaxPreps. They won every state playoff game by double digits, capped off by a 73-50 win over Carmel Christian in the Feb. 22 championship game. The team won its conference games in the Carolinas Athletic Association by an average of 27.0 points and was undefeated (11-0) at home.

Mikey previously received the Mr. Basketball State Player of the Year award from The Charlotte Observer, the first Christ School player to win this award since NBA veteran Mason Plumlee ’09. He was the CAA Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and part of the NCISAA 4-A all-state team.

The 6-foot-9 senior from Rutherfordton has signed with N.C. State University and is one of 23 players nationwide to be invited to the (Allen) Iverson Classic All-American Game on May 3 in Hampton, Va. He was listed as a forward/center but showed comfort everywhere on the floor by leading the Greenies in scoring (15.6 ppg.), rebounding (8.0 rpg.), and blocks (1.0 bpg.).

Madden was an all-state and all-conference point guard who led the team in field-goal percentage (56%), assists (4.3 apg.), steals (2.5 spg.), and free throw percentage (77%). The 6-foot-5 senior from Columbia, S.C., has signed with American University.
