JV Football Wins First Game

Head coach Duncan Barnes speaks to his Christ School JV football team after Thursday's 12-8 win at Rosman.

Henry Meulenberg ’23 looked both amused and honored when his Christ School JV football teammates yelled his last name in breaking down Thursday’s postgame talk.

The freshman quarterback had earned their adoration.

Henry threw a pair of touchdown passes to Cooper Perone ’24 and Jake Regan ’22 in a 12-8 win at Rosman. Tony Provenza ’24 and Jack McCloy ’22 made fourth-quarter interceptions, and the Greenie defense as a whole swarmed a run-heavy Rosman offense after giving up a touchdown on its first series.

First-year head coach Duncan Barnes and the boys not only enjoyed a happy bus ride home but partook in the Christ School tradition of ringing the Angelus bell after a victory. The Greenies improve their record to 1-1 with the win and are home for the first time next week against Charlotte Christian.

“We came in with a game plan and the guys really did a great job of sticking their noses in there (and being physical),” Coach Barnes said. “For some of them, this is the first time they’ve ever been part of a win. It’s good to get that taste in their mouths.”

The Greenies were able to move the ball consistently with their passing attack and overcame two turnovers deep in Rosman territory. After the Tigers scored with just 3.3 seconds to go in the first quarter, Charlie Thomas ’21 returned the ensuing kickoff to the Rosman 37-yard line. Charlie later made a key fourth-down reception in the fourth quarter.

The Charlotte Christian game kicks off October 11 at 4 p.m. and precedes a locally-televised varsity game between the two schools.
