Florida Gulf Coast University basketball is best-known for a Cinderella run to the Sweet Sixteen of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
Matt Halvorsen ‘17 invoked that team in announcing Wednesday over Twitter that he is joining the Eagles next season as a graduate transfer.
“Super excited to announce I’ll be playing my last year of college basketball and pursuing my MBA at Florida Gulf Coast University! Let’s get back to the Sweet 16!” Halvorsen tweeted.
Halvorsen is a 6-foot-1, 183-pound guard from Kingsport, Tenn., who will soon graduate from Western Carolina University with the school’s career record for made 3-pointers (297). That total is the ninth-highest in Southern Conference history.
The Christ School alumnus finished his WCU career with more than 1,000 points and averaged 12.1 points and 2.5 rebounds a game for the Catamounts (11-16) this past season, starting all 27 games. Halvorsen’s shooting percentage from 3-point range was 38.8 percent.
Florida Gulf Coast is located in Fort Myers, Fla., and was the first-ever 15th seed to reach the Sweet Sixteen in 2013.
