PKs Give Soccer Thrilling, Much-Needed Win

Somewhere in the commotion, Jimmy Mennell ’24 was handed a Christ School flag on Friday night.

No one deserved to wave it more.

Jimmy’s thunderous penalty kick shortly after 8:30 p.m. broke a 4-4 tie in sudden death to give varsity soccer a much-needed win over visiting Covenant Day.

The overtime game took more than two hours to complete after the score was 1-1 at the end of regulation. And it worked out perfectly so that much of Christ School’s student section was there for support as it was halftime of the Greenies’ football game with Carrollwood Day (Fla.). The boys swarmed the soccer team in celebration after Jimmy made his kick and he ended up with a flag.

Brendan Regan ’24, Wells Edwards ’25, George Robbins ’24, and Truett Compton ’25 connected on their PKs as well. Heinrich Van Wasielewski ’25 was one of two goalkeepers to see time for Christ School (3-5-1). He laid out to make the winning save.

The Greenies began the season 2-0 but had been winless since Aug. 11. Covenant (3-2), out of Matthews, N.C., scored first Friday via a penalty kick with 37:41 to go in regulation.

It took Christ School 21 minutes and 10 seconds to answer, but the Greenies did. Wells timed his release perfectly, putting his head on Jimmy’s arching free kick from midfield.

The next game for Christ School is Tuesday at Charlotte Country Day.
