Every day on the practice field and certainly in spurts throughout games, Christ School coach Guy Campbell ‘00 sees growth and improvement.
More importantly, he sees a varsity soccer team that has not bailed out on the season.
As of now, the Greenies (1-6-0) have one last home game scheduled, Friday’s 4:30 p.m. matchup against the No. 1 team in NCISAA 4-A soccer, Carmel Christian (9-1-0). Watch the Christ School Broadcast Network live stream at this link. Coach Campbell said that the program will honor the contributions of Mitch Donahoo ’21, Tyler Bell ’21, Charlie Bell ’21, Carson Campbell ’21, Ollie Searle ’21, Luke Rheney ’21, Grant Haldeman ’21, Sam Brie ’21, and Billy Thackston ‘21 with a Senior Day at a later date.
“We’ve asked a lot of these guys. I said before the season that this was probably the toughest schedule we have ever played and I think that’s proven to be true,” Coach Campbell said. “Everyone we have played has been good. The scores and our record don’t reflect what the boys have put into the season, and that’s the reason we as a coaching staff are optimistic and the boys are optimistic. No one has lost any faith. We are showing that we are a talented team and there have been a lot of bright spots, but we just haven’t caught many breaks.”
Coach Campbell likes the way the team connected passes and created scoring opportunities in Tuesday’s 5-2 loss at Asheville School. Goals were scored by freshmen Reeves Cates ‘24 and Ethan Rose ‘24. Billy saved two penalty kicks taken by the Blues in the first half.
For the season, scoring leaders for Christ School are Truett Compton ‘25 (three goals) and Carson (two goals and three assists).
With only three regular-season games left, Coach Campbell said the Greenies are focused on making a final push for the state playoffs.
“That is what we’re grinding for,” he said. “We need to start winning some games so we can get prepared for the state playoffs and make a run.”
