CARY – Sophomores Brooks Barbee ’27 and Dallas Reeves ’27 broke through with all-state performances Friday, meaning a level of personal satisfaction and medals as the ultimate take-home souvenir.
Christ School cross country will grow from every positive at the NCISAA 4-A meet after a season that was badly fractured by Hurricane Helene.
Brooks came in fourth place overall and broke 16 minutes (15:56.10) for the third time as a Greenie. Dallas was not far behind in seventh (16:08.60). Together, they allowed Christ School (ninth place overall, 223 points) to be one of just three teams with a pair of athletes in the top-10, along with meet leaders Cary Academy (62) and Durham Academy (113).
Rounding out the day for the Greenies were Cameron Adkins ‘27 (64th, 17:54.80), Noah Clancy ‘26 (75th, 18:11.40), William Hughes ’25 (76th, 18:13.20), Luke Purvis ‘27 (88th, 19:06.80), and Spencer Vande Weghe ’25 (92nd, 19:40.80),
October is generally the month in which most cross country teams target for peak performance and personal records. But due to Helene, the Greenies had not raced at all in 20 days and Friday was one exactly month since their last North Carolina competition. Among the meets cancelled were this year's Carolinas Athletic Association Championship. The storm also caused the state meet to abruptly skip its yearly rotation, with the NCISAA wisely moving it from Jackson Park in Hendersonville, N.C. to WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary
Senior Night for cross country will take place at halftime of the varsity basketball game on Nov. 8.
